Múlla Ḥusayn was born in Bus̲h̲rúyih, Khurásán. At the age of eighteen he became a disciple of Siyyid Kázim. After Siyyid Kázim's death Múlla Ḥusayn went to Sháríz to search for the Promised One. There on May 22, 1844, he encountered the Báb and, during a dramatic interview with Him, declared his belief. Designated as the Bábu'l-Báb (Gate of the Gate), Múlla Ḥusayn was the first of the eighteen Letters of the Living or disciples of the Báb. He was the leader of the Bábís during savage persecution in Iran and fell martyr at the Fort of S̲h̲ayk̲h̲ Ṭabarsí on 2 February 1849 at the age of thirty-five. Nabíl writes of him: 'The traits of mind and character which, from his very youth, he displayed, the profundity of his learning, the tenacity of his faith, his intrepid courage, his singleness of purpose, his high sense of justice and unswerving devotion, marked him as an outstanding figure among those who, by their lives, have borne witness to the glory and power of the new Revelation.'48 |
