Bábí |
|
Pronunciation: bob-ee |
|
|
A follower of the Báb;
of or pertaining to His revelation. The name Bábí continued to be applied
to the followers of Bahá'u'lláh for several years after His declaration as the One whose advent had been foretold by
the Báb. But during the
later years of Bahá'u'lláh's
residence in Adrianople His followers became known as Bahá'ís. |
The Bábís suffered terrible persecution at the hands of the Muslim clergy and the government of Iran, particularly after the attempt on the life of the S̲h̲ah by two Bábís
in 1852. Over 20,000 Bábís died as martyrs for the Cause of the Báb. |
