Originally (in both English and Arabic), witness: one who bears witness to a belief by submitting to death rather than renouncing one's faith. |
The first martyr of the Bahá'í era was Mullá 'Alíy-i-Bastámí. He was followed by, in the words of Shoghi Effendi, ‘no less than twenty thousand martyrs' who gave their lives in the early days of the Bahá'í Era and who continue to do so to this day. |
The designation of martyr has occasionally been given to others who have sacrificed their lives for the Faith, though not through death. |
