| Secretary; one who writes from dictation or copies manuscripts. |
| In Bahá'í history it refers to the person who wrote down the words of revelation as they were spoken by Bahá'u'lláh and the Báb. Siyyid Ḥusayn-i-Yazdí, one of the Letters of the Living, was the Báb's amanuensis in Máh-Kú and Chihríq. Mírzá Áqá Ján was for many years the amanuensis of Bahá'u'lláh. |
