A descendant of the Prophet
Muḥammad through his daughter Fáṭimih,
with the right to wear the green turban distinguishing his ancestry. A title prefixed
to a man's name, denoting descent from the Prophet.

Descendant of the Prophet
Muḥammad. The word means lord, chief, prince. Lord Curzon says of them in his Persia
and the Persian Question, "an intolerable nuisance to the country, deducing from
their alleged decent and from a prerogative of the green turban, the right to an independence
and insolence of bearing from which their countrymen, no less than foreigners, are
made to suffer." (DB xlvi). Contrast noble Siyyids "of a pure lineage." |
